The former Labour Party governorship candidate for Lagos, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, announced that his decision to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was made with the full approval of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections.

Rhodes-Vivour, who appeared on the Channels Television program ‘Politics Today,’ stated that he and Peter Obi remain in close communication and are “aligned” on their political strategies.

He also revealed that a representative of Obi was present at his official declaration to join the ADC.

“There is no step I am taking that he is not aware of,” he stated.

According to Rhodes-Vivour, the move is part of a broader strategy for the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He said that a coalition is the only viable path to a successful election for the opposition, and they are all working towards that common goal, “regardless of where anybody may be at this time.”

This development comes amid reports of an emerging opposition coalition, with the ADC being considered a potential platform for key figures to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

Meanwhile, the interim leadership of the Labour Party (LP) on Sunday brushed aside the defection of Rhodes-Vivour to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), saying that the development was laughable.

The LP’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Mr Tony Akeni, in a reaction, noted that the step taken by the former governorship candidate did not affect the party in any way, adding that the LP only needed to react to it due to the barrage of inquiries by the news media.
