According to Internal sources , a dramatic showdown unfolded within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of its just concluded National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
The confrontation involved PDP governors and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, a close ally of Minister Nyesom Wike.
The standoff began when the governors discovered that Wike had allegedly directed Anyanwu not to sign a letter notifying the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the party’s forthcoming convention.
In a surprise move, the governors confronted Anyanwu, demanding he sign the letter. Anyanwu, however, insisted that fresh congresses be conducted in Southeast states, including Ebonyi and Anambra, before he would comply.
The governors, displeased and angered by Anyanwu’s conditions, issued an ultimatum: sign the letter immediately or face suspension at the NEC meeting scheduled for that afternoon. The tension escalated, prompting intervention from former Senate President Bukola Saraki.
Saraki cautioned that suspending Anyanwu could destabilize the party ahead of the convention. He directly engaged Anyanwu, urging him to sign the letter. Anyanwu eventually relented, signing the letter against Wike’s alleged wishes .
This development highlights the deepening crisis within the PDP, with Wike and other party leaders locked in a power struggle. The party’s internal conflicts have raised concerns about its stability and unity ahead of the 2027 general elections .
