The Lagos State Government has addressed the concerns raised by TikTok influencer Peller regarding his recent N36 million tax bill.
Abdulkabir Ogungbo, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tax and Revenue, stated that taxation in Lagos applies equally to all individuals earning legitimate income, emphasizing that no one is specifically targeted.
“Section 24 of the Nigerian Constitution mandates every citizen who earns income to declare it honestly and pay taxes,” Ogungbo explained.
When asked if online influencers like Peller are included in this taxation framework, Ogungbo confirmed that recent tax reforms encompass digital assets and virtual transactions. This clarification asserts that TikTok stars, YouTubers, Instagram influencers, and other online earners do not enjoy exemption from taxation based solely on the digital nature of their work.
