The leadership of the Labour Party, under Interim National Chairman Senator Nenadi Usman, has reaffirmed that the party’s leadership dispute has been definitively settled by a Supreme Court judgment, dismissing claims by Julius Abure to the position of National Chairman.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, Ken Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser (Media) to Senator Usman, responded to recent actions by the party’s 2023 Vice-Presidential candidate, Dr. Datti Baba-Ahmed, who reportedly recognized Abure as the substantive National Chairman during an event organized by Abure’s faction.
Asogwa emphasized, “It is imperative to state that the leadership question within the Labour Party has been conclusively settled by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.” He clarified that the court’s “unambiguous” ruling nullified any claim by Abure to the chairmanship and upheld Senator Usman’s leadership, granting all reliefs sought in her appeal.
The statement comes amid heightened tensions following Baba-Ahmed’s participation in a meeting convened by Abure’s faction. Asogwa urged party members to remain calm and resolute, assuring them that the leadership is committed to reaching out to aggrieved members to foster reconciliation and advance the party’s progress.
The Labour Party’s call for unity underscores ongoing efforts to stabilize the party ahead of future political engagements. Neither Abure nor Baba-Ahmed has publicly responded to the statement at the time of this report.
