The Abia State Police Command has arrested six suspects linked to the March 4, 2025, kidnapping and murder of Mazi Chidozie Confidence Chijioke, Managing Director of Dozzman Oil & Gas, along Azumiri Road in Ukwa East Local Government Area. The incident also claimed the lives of ASP Tanko Naptip of the Counter Terrorism Unit, Rivers State Command, and Mr. Anayo Ukwu, Director of Sobaz Oil & Gas, sending shockwaves across the state.
According to a statement by Police Public Relations Officer DSP Maureen Chinaka, operatives, acting on credible intelligence, traced the suspects’ hideout to Ikot Ukpon Village in Obot Akara Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. On Thursday, August 21, 2025, at approximately 8:30 p.m., a coordinated raid led to the arrest of the six suspects. Items recovered included two AK-47 rifles, 57 rounds of live ammunition, one locally made pistol, six magazines, and a large bag containing charms and other items believed to be used for spiritual protection.
However, as the operatives were leaving the camp, they were ambushed by fleeing gang members attempting to free their arrested colleagues. A gun battle ensued, during which the six suspects, who attempted to escape, sustained gunshot wounds and were confirmed dead en route to the hospital. Two police officers were also injured in the crossfire and are receiving treatment.
Abia State Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, described the raid as a significant step in dismantling the kidnapping network terrorizing the Abia-Akwa Ibom axis. He vowed to continue the manhunt for other fleeing suspects, stating, “There will be no hiding place for criminals in Abia State.”
The police urged residents to remain vigilant and report individuals with unexplained bullet injuries or suspicious activities to the nearest police station or via the command’s emergency hotlines.
