In a recent escalation of violence related to the ongoing land dispute in Ama-Iyi Edda, victims have accused Hon. Ejem Okoro and his associates of orchestrating attacks against innocent residents.
Reports indicate that on August 18, a group loyal to Okoro, led by his brother Ukpai Okoro, targeted community members, following a previous peaceful resolution facilitated by the local government. A committee established to address the land conflict had concluded that land ownership lies with individual matrilineal homes, nullifying any collective claim by Ama-Iyi residents.
Despite these findings, individuals loyal to Okoro allegedly attacked several residents, including a blind woman, leading to significant injuries.
Witness Ogbu Okoro Olughu described an incident where trouble erupted at a wake attended by Okoro, claiming he was attacked after being falsely accused of witchcraft. Following a police intervention, Okoro was subsequently assaulted by a group calling for his attention.
Other victims, including Friday Okorie, detailed their harrowing experiences, identifying known community members among the assailants, some of whom are employed in local schools.
Kalu Agwu Orie, another victim, reported being attacked with machetes, while several others required medical attention due to severe injuries, including internal bleeding.
Investigations are ongoing as authorities look into the violent incidents stemming from this land dispute. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
