The Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police, Anthonia Adaku Uche-Anya has condemned the attempt by a group known to be sponsored by Hon. Ejem Okoro to banish a blind elderly woman, Madam Helen Aba Enya. The tension arose following claims against her son, Mr. Nnanna Olughu Agwu, who faces accusations of witchcraft related to a land dispute at the heart of the crisis by the same group..
According to Mrs. Blessing Nnanna who is a wife to Mr Nnanna, the group confronted their family at around midnight, threatening, “He is a wizard; we will kill him and send his family away.” Alarmed, Mrs. Nnanna called her husband, who fled to evade potential violence, given the community’s tensions following a resolution by the Local Government Chairman’s committee regarding the land dispute involving both Ama-Iyi and Ndi Ibe Anuma family.
The next morning, the group demanded either the return of Mr. Nnanna or the ostracization of his family and his elderly, blind mother. Out of fear, the family complied, leaving their home without any belongings and relocating to the nearby community of Ekeje.
The situation eventually calmed after the Nigerian police intervened, inviting both parties to resolve the issue. As a result, Madam Helen, her son, and their family were allowed to return to Ama-Iyi Edda without threats of violence or intimidation.
The police commissioner then warned, “Any further intimidation, action that may affect the people’s peace or tension in the community will be met with equal consequences.”
CP Uche-Anya concluded by advising both parties to allow peace and development within the community, urging all parties to prioritize unity and understanding over conflict.”
