IN every generation, a few names rise above the noise of politics to embody the deeper aspirations of their people. They are men and women whose stories transcend personal ambition, reflecting the struggles, resilience, and hopes of millions. In Nigeria, one such name is Dr Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim – entrepreneur, pro-democracy activist, political strategist, and presidential aspirant under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for 2027.
This biography is more than a chronicle of his achievements; it is the story of a man who has lived at the intersection of Nigeria’s challenges and possibilities, and who now stands prepared to lead a nation hungry for unity, progress, and justice.
Early life: A childhood rooted in diversity Born in Yelwa, Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim’s lite began in one of Nigeria’s culturally diverse communities.
His parentage reflected the unique tapestry of Nigeria itself: a Yoruba mother and a Hausa father, a combination that gave him a natural fluency in bridging divides.
Olawepo-Hashim grew up under the guidance of a stepfather in one of the North Central States, an experience that instilled in him resilience, adaptability, and empathy. His formative years in New Bussa, Niger State, exposed him to the struggles of ordinary Nigerians and gave him a deep understanding of the countrys socio-economic realities from the grassroots.
This background has been central to shaping his outlook: a leader who is detribalised, grounded, and committed to building bridges across ethnic, cultural, and religious divides.
Leadership came early for Olawepo-Hashim. As a student, he immersed himself in the currents of activism that were sweeping Nigeria in the 1980s.
He became an active member of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), where he quickly gained a reputation for courage, intellect, and organizational ability.
The late 1980s were years of deep political repression in Nigeria. Military rule had silenced dissent, and democratic voices were often stifled with intimidation, imprisonment, or worse. Yet, in this atmosphere, Olawepo-Hashim emerged as one of the fearless voices of resistance.
He was at the forefront of the Pro-Democracy Resistance Movement, standing shoulder to shoulder with other activists who dared to imagine a freer Nigeria. His outspokenness and tireless organising earned him not only the admiration of his peers but also the ire of the authorities.
In 1989, his activism reached global recognition when Amnesty International adopted him as a Prisoner of Conscience. This rare honor placed him among a distinguished group of human rights defenders worldwide, affirming his status as a voice of truth in the face of tyranny. For many young Nigerians of his generation, Olawepo-Hashim became a symbol of what was possible – that courage and conviction could challenge even the most entrenched systems of oppression.
But activism alone does not sustain a nation; it must be matched with competence in governance, business, and and innovation. Recognising this,
Olawepo-Hashim transitioned into the world of entrepreneurship, where he has thrived for over 33 years.
He built a successful career in Nigeria’s vital energy sector, particularly through his leadership roles in Oilworld Ltd and Shelf of Nigeria. These ventures showcased not just his business acumen but also his ability to navigate complex negotiations, build trust, and deliver results in challenging environments.
His career has been a testament to his versatility: from mobilizing students in lecture halls to managing multi-million-dollar enterprises, Olawepo-Hashim has consistently shown that leadership is about vision, discipline, and integrity.
Political contributions: Building democracy and political parties
His activism and business success naturally drew him into formal politics. But unlike many who view politics as a vehicle for personal gain, he approached it as an extension of his litelong mission: to strengthen democracy and build inclusive institutions.
He has been deeply involved in party leadership, where his skills as a negotiator and bridge-builder have helped navigate Nigeria’s often turbulent political waters. Known for his detribalised outlook, Olawepo-Hashim has built alliances across Nigeria’s diverse four regions, earning respect as a unifier in a country often polarised along ethnic and religious lines.
His political career reflects both his grassroots activism and his elite competence — a rare blend that makes him stand out in the current political landscape. For many within the PDP and beyond, he represents the possibility of a new political culture: one based on service, fairness, and accountability.
A charismatic and egalitarian Leader
Those who know Olawepo-Hashim describe him with words that go beyond politics: charismatic, egalitarian, compassionate, and visionary. His style of leadership is deeply participatory, rooted in listening as much as speaking, and in negotiating solutions that benefit the collective rather than a privileged few.
He is widely regarded as a national bridge-builder, someone capable of forging unity in a nation deeply fractured by decades of mistrust.
His detribalized upbringing and personal history uniquely qualify him to heal Nigeria’s divisions and create a sense of shared destiny.
Vision for Nigeria: The 2027 aspiration
With Nigeria at a crossroads – facing challenges of insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, and political disillusionment —Dr Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim’s aspiration for the 2027 presidency under the PDP carries weight beyond ambition.
Olawepo-Hashim has the following visions:
National unity: Healing divisions and fostering indusivity across ethnic and religious lines.
Economic Growth: Leveraging his entrepreneurial experience to reform Nigerias economy and create opportunities for all.
Democratic Deepening: Strengthening institutions, protecting human rights, and ensuring that democracy delivers for ordinary citizens.
Youth Empowerment: Drawing from his own legacy as a student leader to empower a new generation of Nigerians with skills, opportunities, and political inclusion.
In Olawepo-Hashim, Nigeria sees not only a politician but a complete statesman – one who has walked the path of sacrifice, achieved success in business, and is now offering himself in service to the nation.
The story of Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim is the story of Nigeria itself – diverse, resilient, marked by struggle but full of promise. From his childhood in Kebbi State and Niger State, through the turbulent years of activism in the 1980s, to his recognition as an Amnesty International Prisoner of Conscience, and finally to his success in business and politics, Dr Gbenga’s life has been a steady preparation for leadership.
As 2027 approaches, his candidacy is more than a political contest; it is a call for Nigerians to imagine a new future – one where leadership is about service, unity, and progress.
Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim is not just a presidential aspirant. He is a national bridge-builder, an egalitarian leader, and a complete detribalized Nigerian whose time to serve at the highest level may have truly come.
