The recent announcement by Hon. Chima Ekumankama, Executive Chairman of Edda Local Government Area, regarding the resolution of a land dispute involving the Ama-Iyi Edda community, families, and buyer Engr. Orji Oke Ukaegbu has garnered mixed reactions from the public.
During his statement, Hon. Ekumankama detailed the establishment of an independent committee led by Hon. Godwin Akaji and Chief Abia Onyike to mediate the ongoing land dispute. The committee concluded that the Ama-Iyi Edda community does not own the disputed land, as ownership resides with matrilineal families. They affirmed that Ukaegbu’s purchase of the land was legitimate and recommended that he be allowed to use the land without encumbrances for the sake of peace.
However, this resolution has been met with backlash, particularly from the Ama-Iyi Edda indigenes, who perceive the outcome as biased towards the buyer. Many community members expressed feelings of betrayal and dissatisfaction, suggesting that the committee’s decision was unfair.
An anonymous citizen of Ama-Iyi Edda voiced concerns over potential unrest, calling for the local council to maintain vigilance to ensure community stability.
Already the village town crier was attacked not minding his age and the attacker made away with his gong bag by some hoodlums, which is traditionally an abomination.
The situation remains sensitive as the community grapples with the implications of the committee’s recommendations. Further discussions and community engagement may be necessary to foster understanding and resolution.
